Bonne Nuit Bay is roughly in the middle of Jersey’s north coast it is a small fishing harbour and a good place for a quiet sunbathe or a picnic but not the best for swimming and completely unsuitable for surfing due to the small boats and their moorings.
Bonne Nuit Bay “Bouonne Niet” in Jersey French directly translates as “Good Night” the bay was given this name because of the safe anchor and shelter this bay provides. It is still a place to shelter but these days locals go there to escape the daily hustle and bustle of St Helier.
At low tide a small sandy beach sits between the pier and a pebble beach, there are also Jersey Heritage properties looking into bay from the headlands above. The high cliffs keep all but northerly winds from disturbing the peace and quite in this sheltered Bay.
The views from the cliff paths surrounding Bonne Nuit Bay are spectacular and give a very elevated point of view, they are actually the highest place to launch a Para glider from in Jersey.
The name Bonne Nuit is first recorded in 1150 and Bonne casino online Nuit Bay was a very popular place for smugglers to do business during the 17th and 18th centuries.
In 1834 a small fort was built to ward off the French invasion “La Crete Fort” overlooks Bonne Nuit Bay and is the official summer residence of the Lieutenant Governor of Jersey. Fishing continues in Bonne Nuit bay, you will see crabs and lobsters being landed by the locals from their small fishing boats. In the BBC television series “Bergerac” visited Bonne Nuit in several episodes and although not the best beach for swimmers it is a popular place to take a dip in the sea from the pier at high tide.
There is an excellent beach cafe at Bonne Nuit which is probably better described as a Thai restaurant. Sawadee beach cafe also known as Bonne Nuit Beach Cafe also serves continental food and home-made cakes. This beach is also a shelter for local and migrating birds often large numbers of ducks take up residence on the beach. Parking can be difficult but if you are patient a space will normally appear. If you are driving around Jersey taking in the natural beauty be patient it is well worth the wait to able to spend some time in Bonne Nuit Bay.
